Confirmation

Past and Present

Junior Confirmation

Confirmation is a traditional rite of passage for young people—a coming of age.   Historically youth were given instruction for two or three years in the doctrines of the faith. This was their opportunity to learn about the faith they had been baptized into. After this period of instruction they would have the opportunity to express their faith publicly (examination) and then be brought into communicant membership of the church (confirmation). This was always seen as their moving from childhood to the privileges and responsibilities of adulthood.

Stepping aside from tradition it can be said that confirmation gives a person the opportunity to publicly embrace what happened at his/her baptism.   When one is baptized as an infant the parents/sponsors answer for the child—expressing their desire for the child to become part of the family of God.   Confirmation allows the individual to speak those vows personally—and in front of the congregation. Thus the heart of confirmation is a personal claiming of all that took place in one’s baptism.

We still offer instruction for youth which takes place on Wednesday evenings.   It is a two-year program (typically seventh and eighth grades).   The goal is provide opportunity for the students to explore their own faith and how to nurture it.   The program involves both cognitive and experiential learning opportunities.

As part of this instruction the second year students study Holy Communion in the fall with their parents.   After this instruction and an interview with the Pastor they are offered first communion the first Sunday in November (observance of All Saints Day).   Their participation in Holy Communion actually becomes part of their exploration of the faith.

This junior confirmation takes place on the first Sunday in May.   It is a time for all to celebrate the faith and this rite of passage for some very special young people.

Adult Confirmation

For adults, confirmation is often the tool by which they may become a member of St. Peter.   There is a six week course in which individuals have opportunity to explore their own faith—and also the teachings of this congregation.   We seek to answer the question of how one is brought into relationship with God. At the same time we discuss why there are so many different church denominations and how ours is unique.   At the end of this six-week course students are given opportunity to become members if they desire. Membership involves a:
  • Confession of faith
  • Embracing of God’s Word (Bible) and St. Peter’s teaching of it.
  • Agreement with St. Peter’s Vision and Strategic plans
  • Commitment to growth, unity, service, and witness.
Technically there are three ways to enter the church:
  1. Confirmation: For one who is already baptized, but new to the Lutheran faith.
  2. Affirmation of Faith: For one who was previously confirmed but left the church.
  3. Baptism: For one who is new to the faith whose baptism marks entrance into the church.
