Missionary Update

Jos, Nigeria

February 3, 2007

Dear Partners in Mission:

Greetings from Jos, Nigeria!
It seems that most of our Updates focus on either getting ready to go somewhere or on having just come back from somewhere. In this Update, I have returned from a week long visit to Jamaica. Yes, Jamaica is rather an odd place for a missionary in Africa to write about, but there are some real connections. The vast majority of Jamaicans today are descendants of African slaves, many from Nigeria. People in Jamaica have a curiosity about Africa. Likewise, many Africans, perhaps more because of Jamaican singer Bob Marley than any other reason, are quite aware of the fact that their people, who were carried off from their homeland so many years ago are still out there somewhere. For the last 15 years, LCMS' World Mission has been sending missionaries from Jamaica. At this time, discussions between LCMS World Mission and the church in Jamaica led to a change of strategy and a request came to the Lutheran Church of Nigeria for a Nigerian pastor who could serve as a missionary in Jamaica.
Rev. Effiong Ekanem, President of the Lutheran Church of Nigeria, and I traveled to Jamaica to meet the people of the church in Jamaica as well as our LCMS World Mission leaders in that corner of the world. While there are significant cultural differences between our cultures in Africa and the people in Jamaica, we believe there is a tremendous potential for a Nigerian pastor to work effectively in Christian Outreach and church planting in Jamaica.
On my way back to Nigeria from Jamaica, I spent 2.5 days in Jackson, Michigan. In addition to spending a couple of days with my parents, I was able to speak one evening to a group of people from two of our T.I.M. congregations as well as at an LWML prayer breakfast. I also repeated some medical tests from last November.
I returned to Nigeria last Sunday. Since then, both Luke and Jonathan have been struggling with a stubborn virus. Both boys have had high fevers and missed a lot of school.
Again, thank you for your prayers for all of our travel and mission endeavors. Our prayer is that all of these endeavors equip the church in West Africa to reach out with the Good News of life and salvation to millions of unreached and uncommitted people. Thank you for your partnership in mission.
The Erbers
David, Joyce, Luke, Jonathan and Naomi
